Final Reports
The first step toward an understanding of the roles of selenium and other elements in southeast Idaho's human and ecological health is to study the concentrations of selenium and other metals in water, plants, animals, and other matrices throughout the area. These investigations, ongoing since 1998, are intended to establish baselines for metal concentrations in natural systems in southeast Idaho and help make assessments of regional risk to human and ecological health.
You can download reports concerning area-wide studies from here. These reports are in Portable Document File (PDF) format, and you can get the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader free from Adobe's website. You'll also need WinZip to extract the reports.
Once the area-wide investigations have established baseline concentrations for chemicals of potential concern, then it becomes possible to determine whether or not individual phosphate mines, both active and historic, have released significant amounts of metals into their surroundings and whether these metals have an effect on plants, animals, and/or human interests in the area. This stage of the project began in 2003, and reports will be available for selected mines late in the year.
You can download reports concerning site-specific studies here. These reports are in Portable Document File (PDF) format, and you can get the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader free from Adobe's website. You'll also need WinZip to extract the reports. Following the link to these reports from this page will bring you to a list of folders named after all of the mines that will be investigated. If there are no reports currently available for a specific mine, you will see a "readme" file which contains information on the schedule for that mine's investigation.
